Thrift Roulette: Upcycling Things For Celebrities

Welcome to Thrift Roulette, a DIY / upcycle game where we randomly select a home goods item and celebrity and make something inspired by their space. Here’s how you play!

How to play

  1. Spin the wheel to select which home goods item you will be making

  2. Throw a dart at the dart board and whichever celeb it lands on is who you will be making it for

  3. Watch the Architectural Digest Open Door episode of the selected celebrities home

  4. Go to the thrift store and DIY / upcycle your selected item to one that you can see fitting into their home

Round One
Lighting x Alicia Keys

Alicia’s AD Tour is beautiful! Her modern mansion is located in California right on the coast of the ocean. It is filled with simplistic and timeless art, an open layout, clean neutral tones, large windows with beautiful views, and elegant sculptures and decor pieces scattered throughout the house.

To fit in with the sculpture / artwork vibe throughout the home, I found this sonophone shaped desktop phone holder at the thrift store. Immediately, I connected the sleekness of the design and music reference to Alicia and knew it had to be my light.

To make it, I grabbed another lamp in the thrift store with a working light in it and with the way that the mock sonophone was built, I could easily thread the wiring through it and add a light bulb to make it into a desk lamp!

Here’s how the final result turned out!

Round TWO
TABLE x gwyneth paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow’s house is described by AD as a ‘Tranquil Montecito Home.’ All around the areas you will find light tones and invited environments. The home is inspired by Paltrow’s time is Santa Barbara, where she fell in love with Montecito design.

Finding a preexisting table that was in good enough shape to do a slight upcycle on was pretty tough, so I looked at some other items around the thrift store instead. As soon as I spotted this vase I knew that it would go perfectly with the neutral tones that Gwenyth has in her room beside the swing she reads in (pictured above). It would be the perfect base, now I just needed some sort of top, and when I happened upon this plate it was like it was meant to be!

This DIY was super simple! All I had to do was clean off the pieces and use a strong adhesive to use the amber plate as a ‘table top’. It is really elegant and unique, and I think could be perfect as a plant stand, key holder at a door or even just a nice decor piece!

This is how it looks styled!

Round THREE
CLOCK x troye sivan

Troye Sivan’s house is located in Melbourne, Australia and completely gives off mid century modern meets jungle vibes. Everything about this space screams beauty. The home originally was a handball court in the late 1800s and since has turned into this soulful ‘architectural gem’.

I wanted the clock I made to represent all the clean lines and wood tones around his space. I found this random tube shaped item at the thrift store that gave me the perfect idea for a MCM clock.

I cut out a hole in the wooden item I got and took apart another clock I got at the thrift store to use the mechanics of it. All I did was add some edge banding to create a cleaner look and it was done!

Here are the final results!
