Reupholstering A Pillow With A Tufted Rug
Hey all, it’s Kelsey! What once was the result of a fun team outing, is now a decorative pillow in my kitchen. In this DIY I’ll show you how to turn a small tufted rug into a cozy pillow for your space.
Materials
Fabric for reupholstering (½ meter)
Tufted rug
Pillow form
Scissors
Measuring tape or ruler
Pins
Sewing machine (optional)
Sewing kit
Thread
Step 1:
Measure and cut two pieces larger than your pillow dimensions. In this case, My pieces were 20 inches wide by 15 & ¼ inches long. Allowing for seam allowance and an envelope-style closure with about 5 inches of overlap.
Formula: L=L/2+3+4 (seam allowance) W=W+4 (seam allowance)
Beginner sewing tip: if you want to find a perfect straight line in your fabric, you can usually pull on a thread and it will reveal a straight line for you.
Step 2:
Roll and pin one of the long edges on each piece. Sew down along the pinned edge to secure a clean hem.
Step 3:
Lay pieces wrong sides up and overlap where the hem edges are (mine overlapped about 5 inches). Pin in place at each end and add a few stitches ensuring it stays in place while sewing the rest of the pillowcase
Step 4:
Good sides together, start pinning edges down (envelope portion should sit in the middle). Set your first line of stitching to the highest setting, or if you’re hand stitching use a loose stitch. This allows you to easily pop any loose yarns back inside the case when it’s flipped back the right way.
Step 5:
Sew around the edges of the fabric, ensuring to leave the envelope closure open for inserting your pillow.
Step 6:
Flip case back to its right side and insert your pillow through the envelope closure.
