Style Selected - Elle Mills!
Today we’re back with another super exciting episode of Style Selected! Today we’re extra excited because we’ve traveled to Ottawa to meet Elle Mills (you can check her out here)! Elle and her family just moved into a brand new house and Elle’s room is still a bit empty and lacks a lot of personality, so we’re here to help! Here’s what her room looked like before…
Elle’s dream room would consist of a giant desk for editing, more personality, and some cool places in her room to film! She would love for us to draw inspo from old 80s and 90s movies, specifically styles from directors such as John Hughes (a total feel-good movie vibe!) and classic music like The Jackson 5! With all of this info, we got designing!
BECKY’S IDEA
So, I know that Elle really likes classic John Hughes movies and 80s/90s movies, so my plan is based around building a room that a character from one of these movies may live in! I’m going to move her bed to the center of the room to create a focal wall, add tons of funky 80s/90s decor, add a large desk, and create a DIY giant letter art to replicate the Coca-Cola font!
KELSEY’S IDEA
My first thought was to rearrange the room and utilize the space a bit more wisely. The plan is to push the bed to the side wall and add a super long desk right beside the bed, kind of looking like the bed and desk are a build-in unit, rather than being two separate pieces. The big project in this room is to add one focal brick wall to one wall to add a super lofty vibe to this new home. A lot of the decor in this room is thrifted and found, giving it a collected and interesting vibe!
Elle looked at both, and decided to go with Kelsey’s idea! We cleared out the room and got to work!
We put up the brick wall, painted the other walls red, and got started on the desk!
DIY COLLECTED DESK
We LOVE the idea of finding old pieces or furniture legs, and adding them to a new table top to create a super cool and eclectic desk!
We found a really cool laundry chest from the thrift store, sanded, painted, and paired it with these hairpin legs. We then grabbed a simple piece of wood from the hardware store, sanded and stained that, and attached everything together!
We also went ahead and added some plaster to the brick wall to look more realistic!
Time to add finishing touches!
AFTER
And that’s it! We are so so so happy with how this room turned out! Be sure to check out the video below for more Elle Mills fun!
