Laundry Closet Makeover
My “laundry room” is actually just a double doored closet in my basement bathroom, that also stores my hot water heater, furnace, and a ton of exposed pipes. This is my main bathroom, and the closet doors are often open, especially when there is a load in the wash, so I’ve come to the unfortunate realization that it’s just not realistic to expect the door to be closed. So the time has come to make it look a bit prettier.
Before
Exposed Walls
First, I wanted to cover up all the exposed plumbing, gas, and wiring. To do this, I chose faux tin tiles that would keep things looking clean and be easily removable in case I needed access to any shutoffs. I managed to cut them to size using a template I made out of recycled paper, and to attach them to the wall, I used two-part epoxy to adhere magnets to the back so it can be easily removable in the future.
Storage and Countertop space
Storage and organization were essential, so I had some clever hacks in mind for that. I decided to add a wooden butcherblock tabletop over the laundry machines which provided a solid surface for folding clothes. For even more storage, I checked out a past How To Go Do tutorial on how to DIY floating shelves and added one long one on the wall behind the machines.
Aesthetics
Unlike many of our other makeovers, this laundry room doesn’t really have the space or function for a lot of decorative elements, but to boost the look a bit more, I painted some pipes (making sure not to cover any important information on them) and updating the pipe hanger system so that I could still hang clothing up to dry. I also added baskets for storage and a clear jars for laundry detergents and misc. items. I labelled the jars with a wax pencil to keep things organized.
The Reveal
In the end, my laundry room makeover was a success, and I couldn't be happier with the results. It just goes to show that even the most functional spaces in your home can benefit from a little creativity and DIY magic. If you're thinking about giving a room in your home a makeover, I hope this post has inspired you to take the plunge and turn your vision into reality. Happy renovating!
