Finishing My Basement Dressing Room - Making Home w/ Kelsey

I'm so excited for you guys to see this makeover, it was definitely A LOT to take on! What would you call this? My walk-in closet / basement / landing area? It has tons of cool structural details, so it was such a fun challenge to use them as a part of the design! This makeover has lots of DIY’s and hacks (and maybeeee even some stolen items from our office).

I really strived to keep this makeover affordable, and one of the things I did to achieve that was fixing up my stairs / landing area by myself, which was a lot of work and brain power. Before renovating my house, there was a thick layer of plaster on the wall along my staircase, which was covering a layer of wallpaper, and underneath a layer of brick! I knew when I found out there was brick, I wanted an exposed brick moment, BUT when I took off all the plaster it seemed too stark of a contrast and needed a little bit of help. I scoured the internet looking for inspiration and came across a Toronto based Instagram page “Luciani Projects” that had the perfect idea! I decided to paint it all one colour, and use some plaster to merge the two textures together and make it look intentional! This way, it keeps that rustic look, but still holds the minimal vibe I wanted for this space. Next, I had to tackle the staircase itself. After renovations, the staircase was already upgraded, but needed a good wax stain in order to keep it looking nice and put together. I then styled the area with some small decor pieces and that section was complete!

While doing decor, I had this vision of a fabric sconce for this space, but when I looked online for the one I was imagining, there was nothing like it on the market. I took to the office to find old supplies and took my best shot at what I could make! Using an old embroidery hoop I created a frame for some fabric I dyed to hold onto. Then I popped in an old sconce and there it was! It is just perfect for the space! While doing MORE decorating, I saw this beautiful wall mount vase from Firm Living online but it couldn’t ship to Canada in time, so I sprinkled some pepper into polymer clay and had my go at making my own version!

This whole makeover spanned over a year, so you already know there is so many more
things I tackled for this space! Here are some after shots of the whole dressing room!
I am very happy with how it turned out, truly feels like home.
