Retro Eclectic Cabin Makeover

We got the opportunity to decorate this old cabin in the heart of Muskoka, Ontario. It definitely needed some love in order for it to appeal to a younger audience of vacationers.

Before:

Living Room

When planning this makeover, the first thing we came across was this beautiful wallpaper from Etsy. Instantly, we knew that the rest of the cabin needed to match that. In order to achieve that, we made the colour palette based off of it. We pulled the orange from the wall paper and painted the wood beams above to match. We also brought both blue and green elements in to match the teal base colour of the wall paper. The rug and curtains brought the blue tones out while the couch and side table focused on the green.

Kitchen

The cabin is very open, so the kitchen and living room are essentially the same space, and while we wanted the whole thing to be uniform we also wanted to separate the two rooms to give the appearance of a bigger cabin. To do this, we used the couch as a divider of the two rooms and made the kitchen a bit more minimal. That being said, we painted an accent wall the same colours as the beams to bring in the colour from the wallpaper across the room. In order to keep the eclectic vibe in the kitchen, without getting too chaotic, we made open shelving and assured that all the plates, pots and glasses were appropriate for the space.

BedRoom

Lastly, we made over the bedroom. This space has a wall separating it from the rest of the cabin, so it allowed us to veer off of our colour palette slightly while still keeping the feeling the same. There was one wall in the room that was not wood, so it was an obvious opportunity for an accent wall. The room was however, much darker than the rest of the cabin, so to lighten it up, we used a bright yellow colour. The rest of the room kinda fell into place from there. We used solid colours, along the same lines of colour palette (retro-eclectic colours) and the bedroom was finished!

All together, we loved how this turned out. Although the colours are bright, it’s the perfect opportunity to try out a style like this because it is a rental space, so it isn’t too high of stakes! Watch the whole video of the makeover here:
