DIY GARAGE MAKEOVER- MAKING HOME W/ KELSEY
So far I’ve renovated my whole house and most of the exterior but one part of the home still needs a little love; the garage! Last year I started to tackle my outdoor space but I didn’t really have enough time to give the garage the attention it deserves, so that’s what we’re focusing on now!
Some of my main priorities for the garage makeover include shelf organization, creating bike storage, revamping the garage lighting, and putting up some drywall. So let’s get started!
I started by cleaning out the garage and organizing everything into storage bins according to different categories. Some of my categories included “seasonal decor” and “painting supplies” which I labelled onto the bins using white chalk markers. This also helped me declutter some things I had around the house that didn’t need to take up all that space and could be stored in the garage. I made sure to leave some bins empty for future storage.
Next, it was time for the drywall. I chose to use drywall because they are pretty easy to install and also quite affordable (it costs about $15 for a 4x8 sheet). I reused pieces I already had lying around at the office. I was a little nervous about how the drywall would hold up against the uneven 100 year old garage wall but it seemed to hold up pretty well. I also hid some of the unevenness by plastering the wall with texture, which also gave me a fun feature wall in the end! I finished the wall with a coat of paint that was was left by the previous homeowner. It was the same paint colour as the deck pergola and coincidentally a great colour to bring life to the textured wall in the garage.
The next day, I went in to stain the shelves in a chestnut colour which brought a richness to the shelf and I also added a statement light that brought an industrial chic vibe to the space.
My final priority was to make the garage more functional so I put in some c-hooks for bike storage and assembled a shelf to hang my tools. I also built a work table to use for future projects where I’d be working in the garage.
