DIY Budget-Friendly Custom Kitchen Makeover - Making Home
Welcome to my series Making Home where I makeover my newly renovated house into my dream home! If you haven’t seen the previous episodes where I demo my house, go through renovations and finally start decorating then you need to check out our playlist here. After I totally transformed my basement bathroom into the spa bathroom of my dreams the next space I needed to makeover is my kitchen.
During the renovation I decided that the kitchen was the only space in the entire house that I wasn’t going to renovate, other than knocking down a few walls. Originally this kitchen was yellow and green, last updated in the early 2000’s. Take a look at it before!
BEFORE
For this makeover, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on it since I plan on renovating the kitchen in a couple years. The big things I want to do are paint, update the hardware, add a pendant light, get rid of the ugly chrome breakfast bar and make the dining nook way cozier. Let’s get started!
First off I painted the yellow walls and the green tile white to give it all a fresh look. I’m going to work with the green countertops for now since I don’t mind the colour and it’ll get demoed in a few years anyway! Before I could do anything else I really wanted to get rid of the metal chrome breakfast bar attached to the kitchen island which required sawing off the attached bars. Once removed, I built a custom wooden breakfast bar by attaching a small wooden base to the countertop to hide the holes left behind by the chrome one, and then attached the new wood plank on top. I sanded this all down, rounded out the one corner with a jigsaw and painted the whole thing white. I like how this bar is still functional but way more modern than the previous one.
Next up is tackling this dining nook. It’s okay as it is right now, but I’m going for a more vintage palette of black, white, beige and green accents so I’m painting the nook matte black. I also wanted to replace the table that was in there, so I thrifted a vintage cast iron table leg and a white marble top. This was such a steal off of Facebook Marketplace and I was able to upcycle them to fit together perfectly with some silicone!
To finish up this nook I added some great pieces that really pulled it together. First I sewed some custom black seat cushions for the bench, added in some wishbone chairs that I seat-covered with the ladder fabric, and then hung some beige linen curtains. Finally I added throw pillows and a canvas that my best friend is going to paint custom art on - all in good time!
And with that I got started on the final touches which were switching out the handle on the back door with a matte black one, spray-painting the cabinet handles hammered gold and adding in tons of plants. Check out my new budget-friendly custom kitchen makeover!
