Rethinking Fall Decor To Make It Less Basic
Okay you guys know I love me some fall decor, but I feel like every year its always the same so in todays video, I try and switch it up. I tackle 3 DIY's changing some classic decor elements into unique pieces for my space: the basic white candle, a throw blanket and a fall garland. Which one is your favourite?
Spicing Up the Plain White Candle
In fall, a plain white candle is always a great way to add warmth and comfort into a space, but to add a more unique twist, try this DIY!
Step 1 : Melt down plain white candle wax chips in a double boiler (ensure the glass you use for this is able to heat up!)
Step 2 : When thinking about fall, earthy tones generally come to mind. I decided to change my colour palette to burnt versions of the primary colours! It still has an earthy feel, but brings in new colours from other seasons! That being said, grab a couple of crayons in your new colour palette and chop them up in preparation of melting them down.
Step 3 : Once the crayons are melted, pour the wax into a tall skinny vessel and dip the white candles into them to colour. Hang them to dry and voila! They are all set to be styled.
Switching out the chunky knit blanket
a staple fall decor piece is a chunky knit blanket. they are UNDOUBTEDLY comfortable and adorable, but sometimes change is fun! so try this out instead!
Step 1 : Get two identical thin blankets from Ikea and sandwich some batting in between them.
Step 2 : Pin all three pieces together in preparation of sewing them together.
Step 3 : space and mark out where the lines will be sewn on the fabric and start on one end sewing vertically up the whole blanket. (tip: I started drawing out the lines and sewing along the markings, but I found it simpler to eye ball it as the blanket would skew in different directions depending on the wrinkles) I placed my seam lines about 4 inches apart.
Step 4 : Once all the seams are done, cut out the access batting that is falling out of the edges and roll in the fabric to make a clean hem. Top stitch this together and you have an extremely luxe, comfortable fall blanket.
Reworking your typical fall garland
When Pinterest-ing ‘fall garland’, usually all that comes up is your typical fake orange leaves string. lets try and spice it up a bit.
Tip 1 : Play around with direction and height
Tip 2 : Play with colours! Like mentioned before, I switched up the colour scheme yellow, blue and red, but all in a burnt tone. This brought in colours that were already in my space, but made them feel a bit more autumn-esque.
Tip 3 : Mix real and fake pieces together. Some dried flowers last long and add more life into your display.
Tip 4 : Add objects into the space (i.e. candles, vases, gourds, etc.)
Tip 5 : Put colours from your palette into every section of the garland.
