DIY Rattan Partition (step-by-step)
Material List
Saw of your choice (we used a circular saw)
Twelve 8’ pieces of 1x2 wood (for reference, we used select pine pieces)
20’ of rattan (or 3 pieces of 77”x17”)
Pocket Hole Jig
Drill
Clamp
48 1.25” coarse thread pocket hole screws
Staple gun & staples
Brad nailer & 1.25” nails
6 hinges
Step 1 -
Cut down pieces of wood. Using your 8’ pieces of wood, cut each piece into a 75” length and 18” length. You should have 24 separate pieces of wood.
Step 2 -
Set your pocket hole jig to the ¾” depth. You will be drilling a set of pocket holes into each end of all the 75” piece’s. Clamp your wood and the jig to a table to drill in two parallel holes using the guides. Set your stop collar to ¾” on the drill bit and set your drill to the highest speed. Proceed to drill the holes.
Step 3 -
Butt up the long piece of wood to the shorter piece and drive a screw into the pre-existing hole to connect the two. Do this to make a full rectangle and repeat the step until all 6 frames are built.
Tip: It helps to reduce the speed and the torque when driving screws into the wood.
Step 4 -
Once the wood frame is built, take your rattan and cut out three pieces measuring 77”x17”. Using a staple gun, staple the pieces into place to cover the opening.
Step 5 -
Use your nail gun to reinforce the two pieces of wood together (pocket holes facing in) so that the rattan is sandwiched between the two.
Step 6 -
Paint or stain the wood to your desired colour that fits your space.
Optional - stain the rattan to match or leave it natural for an accent
Step 7 -
Using a drill, pre-drill your holes to attach all the panels with your hinges. Use the screws that come with your hinges to create a folding mechanism.
