DIY Mid Century Modern Modular Shelving Unit
I’m sure you’ve seen a Modular Shelving units before while searching Mid Century Modern Home Decor on Pinterest. Poul Cadovius, the inventor of Modular Shelving, created this design concept to eliminate wasted space in interior design. As I was making over my walk-in closet space, I decided I wanted to add some space for shoe storage! This type of shelving is super pleasing to the eye, but also such an efficient storage solution. That being said, they are extremely pricey, so I thought I would give it the ol’ DIY try and make a ‘mock’ modular shelf in my space.
Materials
Laser level
Wood conditioner
small screws for support pieces
satin bronze + rustic must spray
IKEA brackets (4 small + 8 large)
Heres What I did:
Step 1 - Planning / Measurements
Once I decided where I was going to place the shelving, I used masking tape as a guide to collect my desired measurements for each shelf. See the sketch below for my specific measurements, however, these can vary depending on your space!
Step 2 - Making Your Cuts
I made all my cuts with the tools I had at office, however, it is possible to get these cuts done for you at your local hardware store! All cuts listed above. After all the pieces were to size, I conditioned and stained each one to my liking.
Step 3 - Mounting
I then drilled the vertical wood strips (support pieces) to the wall, along my markings and used a laser level to ensure that they are parallel.
Step 4 - Wall Brackets
I spray painted the wall brackets I got from IKEA (linked here) to match my desired style. Next, I attached them to the support pieces with the wall mount screws it came with. Ensure that they are in line with each other for the shelves to slide into straight.
Step 5 -
Lastly, I slid my shelves into the brackets and voila - a mock modular shelf for my space!
