We Made Over a 1800s Grist-Mill Guest Room | Upgrade My Stay
We’re back with another episode of Upgrade My Stay and the cozy vibes of this one are next level! If you’re not familiar with our new series, Upgrade My Stay is a show where we check into vacation rentals with the goal of upgrading the stay experience with some DIY, design, and decor, all before check-out. This week we’re in Perth, Ontario, a small town about an hour outside Toronto where our hosts Kate and Mitchell rent out Kate’s late grandmothers grist-mill from the 1800s. The main priority for change was to just freshen up the space, the furniture was a bit mismatched and it could use some decor elements. This property is absolutely stunning and had so much beauty already, so our job wasn’t too hard! Time to get started!
Lets get moving!
This place is already beautiful, so we just needed to really bring everything together. We started by getting rid of the old mismatched furniture, taking down the curtains, and painting some of the wood elements. The room already had a lot dark accents, so we decided to cover a couple of the wood surfaces in blacks and greens to really bring in a cozy, elegant vibe, while still leaving a lot of the beautiful wood.
Adding personality
As mentioned before, this beautiful mill was owned by Kate’s late grandmother, so we thought in order to honour her space, we would make a gallery wall and incorporate her personality into it. One way we did this was getting a portrait painted of her that matched the style of the space (painted by - ). To hang them up we used craft paper as a template and planned it out on the tall wall. It really filled up the space and made the design look very intentional.
FINISHING TOUCHES
To finish this space off we added in some small decor pieces found at various thrift stores! Take a look at this cozy cabin getaway room!
