How To Style Shelves!

Today we’re tackling a problem that everyone who wants to decorate runs into, how the heck do I style my shelves?! People often use shelves for strictly storage! They are usually quite large and tall, drawing your eye to them! Because of all of this attention they get in a room, they should be functional and stylish!

Honestly up until now we’ve kind of left the styling of shelves to chance. And admittedly sometimes we’re not the best at it! So we’ve broken down shelf styling into steps. Rules that we can all follow to turn our crowded or awkwardly styled shelves or bookcases into gorgeous displays that will have HGTV knocking on your door

We’ll show you how style your shelves on any shelf size, from built-ins to single floating shelves. To show you these rules we’re teaming up with our friend Adelaine. You may remember from our very first style selected episodes and more recently our vlog channel (subscribe if you haven’t already) where we helped her out with her built ins in her new house back at Christmas time. She messaged us recently and asked if we could help her transition her shelves into spring. We got this.

TIP #1

We always hit the thrift store first whenever we go shopping. There we find unique items and we’ll spend wayyy less money than if we went to amazon or a home decor store first

TIP #2

Figure out your colour scheme and what you might be missing from your shelves before you go shopping! This is going to save you time and money.

TIP #3

If you are shopping and don’t know what to get, always look for bowls, botanicals, baskets, and books!

TIP #4

Don’t overlook items that are dirty or the wrong colour. Things can be cleaned and painted!

TIP #5

Lay out everything you have to use and then start assembling before you put stuff on the shelves!

Tip #6

If you want the look of plants but don’t think you’ll keep them alive, grab some faux plants at the craft store!

Now that we’ve picked up everything we need, here is the The Sorry Girls rules to styling a shelf!

RULE #1: PICK A SCHEME

Colour scheme, your space probably has some kind of colour scheme, bring that into your shelving too. Hide things that don’t fit the scheme so much. A scheme can have lots of colours. It doesn’t have to be 2 or 3.

RULE #2: USE HEIGHT

Height and layering (back to front and top to bottom), use medium sized objects to bridge the height gap between a shorter and tall items.

RULE #3: GIVE EVERYTHING SPACE

Let the colours breathe! Every colour doesn’t have to be on every shelf - use subtle accents! Don’t focus on spacing everything evenly, gathered items into groups looks better!

RULE #4: GET PERSONAL

Show your hobbies and get personal! Don’t be afraid to show cameras, stationary, pens, pencils.

RULE #5: ODD IS BETTER

Groups of odd numbers tend to look nicer!

RULE #6: MIX IT UP

Have a variety of items, and when in doubt remember books, baskets, and botanicals!
