What You Will Need:
Mirror
Cardboard
Mirror cutter
Scrap paper
Masking Tape
Water
Glue
Paper towel
Sandpaper
Step 1
Mark the shape of the oblong mirror you want to create on the cardboard. Then, carefully cut out the shape using scissors or a craft knife.
Step 2
Place the cardboard cutout over the mirror and adjust it until it covers the surface area you want it to. Make sure it is centered and level.
Step 3
Using a mirror cutter, trim any overhang of the corners of the mirror that are not covered by the cardboard. Make sure to wet sand down the edges so you avoid any sharp edges when moving around the mirror.
Step 4
Tear strips of scrap paper and tape them over the cardboard cutout to create a mold of the oblong shape. Make sure the strips are tightly secured and cover the entire surface.
Step 5
Mix together equal parts water and white glue in a mixing bowl to create a papermache base. Stir the mixture until it is smooth and free of lumps.
Step 6
Tear small pieces of paper towel and dunk them into the papermache mixture. Make sure they are completely coated with the mixture.
Step 7
Take the dunked paper towel pieces and cover the mold you just created with them. Overlap the pieces slightly and smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles.
Step 8
Mix together Celluclay and water in a mixing bowl to create a paste. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct proportions.
Step 9
Using your hands, mold the Celluclay paste over the entire frame, covering the paper towel layer. Smooth out any rough edges or bumps. Then, set it aside to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 10
Once the Celluclay is completely dry, use sandpaper to sand down the frame to create smoother edges. Wipe off any excess dust and it’s time to attach the mirror onto the frame!
Step 11
Adhere the mirror onto your new frame with construction adhesive and attach a hanging mechanism to the mirror. I did this by using a scrap piece of wood in our office and some hooks!
Final Results
Creating an oblong plaster mirror can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. With a little time and effort, you can create a unique and stylish piece that adds a personal touch to your home décor.
