DIY Modern Slatted Wood Sideboard Upcycle

We found a wooden sideboard for FREE on Facebook Marketplace, and thought it would be the perfect base for a wood-slatted project we’ve been dying to take on. Here’s what the sideboard looked like before:

We’re going to try to change it into something like these inspiration pics we found on Pinterest - follow us there if you haven’t already!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 13 pieces of 11/16” x 7/16” finger jointed pine lattice (the amount may vary depending on the size of your cabinet so measure it out first)

  • Saw

  • Measuring tape

  • Sandpaper

  • Wall putty

  • Nails

  • Nail gun (or hammer)

  • Wood glue

  • Paint

First, measure the square lattice pieces to the height of your cabinet and cut the pieces with a saw. Ours took 13 pieces of lattice that came out to 52 smaller pieces, but that number will vary depending on the size and height of your cabinet.

Next I sanded the entire thing down to remove the shine, making it easier to paint, and removed any extra hardware that we didn’t need. We also removed the middle frame since it’s not our vibe and we’ll be installing a middle shelf later.

Now you’re going to start the hard part! Apply wood glue to one side of your lattice piece, holding it in place on the sideboard and using a nail gun to nail it down your furniture piece.

To continue this pattern use another piece of lattice to act as a spacer and repeat the above instruction right beside it, leaving an even lattice-sized gap between each nailed-down piece. Repeat this around the entire outside!

We also added a shelf in the middle of our sideboard where the gap was, but this will depend on the make of your upcycled furniture piece.

Once you’ve nailed down all of your slatted wood pieces, prime it with a coat of white primer, and finish it off with a paint colour of choice - we went with a glossy black colour. Check out our awesome upcycled wood-slatted sideboard.
